Mt Everest
Captain Kohli, our Patron led India's historic first ascent of Mt. Everest, leading a remarkable expedition that saw a record-breaking nine climbers summit the peak. Moving forward, Captain Kohli would play a pivotal role in spreading the spirit of adventure, trekking and mountaineering in India.
1971
The birth of trekking
Captain Kohli joined Air India and was appointed as the head of tourism. He pioneered the concept of ‘trekking in the Himalaya’ and orchestrated its promotion across the world. This image features Captain Kohli & Tenzing Norgay in Chamonix.
1989
The Indian Mountaineering Foundation
Captain Kohli was elected as President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, where he further promoted a culture of adventure.
1965
Padma Bhushan
Captain Kohli was awarded the Padma Bhushan for leading India’s successful expedition to Mt Everest, and subsequently, for promoting mountaineering in India.
1989
Himalayan Environment Trust
In response to widespread environmental damage across the Himalayan region, leading mountaineers of the generation including - Sir Edmund Hillary, Chris Bonington, Reinhold Messner, Junko Tabai, Maurice Herzog and Captain Kohli established the Himalayan Environment Trust.
2002
One More Step
Capt. Kohli authors his 23rd book, his autobiography where he documents his extraordinary journey of grit, resilience and courage.
1985
A New Beginning
Maninder our Founder completed various mountaineering courses and climbed mountains in the alps and the Himalaya, but eventually decided to join a career in banking with Citibank.
1994
An Adventure Themed Hotel
The Legend Inn hotel chain is established with each room named after a peak or a mountaineer with 60 rooms. Additionally both properties house an adventure museum dedicated to the growth of mountaineering in India. The Delhi property additionally includes a 40 foot Indoor Rock Climbing Wall.
2005
An Adventure Community
Fueled by his early explorations of the Himalayas, Maninder established a trekking community to share his passion for exploration and the mountains.
2010
The Birth of Juniper
Leveraging his two decades of experience and culminating a long-held dream, Maninder transitioned from his successful 20-year tenure as a Senior Vice President at Citibank to establish Juniper, a travel company poised to fulfill his entrepreneurial vision.
2015
100 Treks in the Himalaya
Maninder notches his 100th trek in the Himalaya, traversing foothills, summits, rivers, meadows and more - a testament to his enduring passion for these mountains.
2020
Fire & Ice
Juniper unveils "Fire & Ice," a new approach to outdoor exploration. Where travelers experience the thrill of adventure by day, and unwind in luxurious comfort at night, by staying in boutique hotels, cozy lodges, or charming homestays. This format seamlessly blends exhilarating adventures with comfort.

Responsible travel and research
Juniper has been active in over 50 Himalayan regions for the past 30 years, empowering families across the Himalayas through employment opportunities. We collaborate closely with our trip leaders and guides, and advocate for following a well-established code of conduct – a guiding principle that ensures a responsible and respectful travel experience for all.
